Unit 3: Density and Buoyant Force
Juan, Alex, Gerardo, & Cherlynn
Unit 3 focused on Density, and Buoyancy/Buoyant Force. In this unit we were able to measure the mass, volume, and calculate the density of other objects that are regular and irregular. We also focused on the three equations which are Density= Mass/Volume, Mass= Density x Volume, Volume= Mass/Density. Another thing we did was measure buoancy force of objects, calculate the net force, and predict if they will sink or float. The project after this unit is the Boat Project.
8th Grade Science Standards Covered:
All objects experience a buoyant force when immersed in a fluid. As a basis for understanding this concept:
- Students know density is mass per unit volume.
- Students know how to calculate the density of substances (regular and irregular solids and liquids) from measurements of mass and volume.
- Students know the buoyant force on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid the object has displaced.
- Students know how to predict whether an object will float or sink.
